The creation of efficient backbone urban transportation system belongs to long-term goals of town Bratislava. Bratislava Petrzalka is the biggest town district with more than 115000 inhabitants. The designed backbone system should allow direct connection of public urban and regional transportation (the connection of Petrzalka with other town districts and also with nearby villages and town to the east and north of Bratislava). The backbone system should be connected to the TEN-T European corridor as well and even partly utilise its infrastructure possibly using dual system vehicles (Tram-trains).

Problems and study goals

The main objective of the study was to evaluate various operational alternatives for the transportation system (e.g. Tram-trains vs. trams only) respecting the operation on the international TEN-T corridor. Simulation study was focused on following problems and tasks:

  • Feasibility evaluation of operational alternatives and comparison of advantages/disadvantages.
  • Examination of the operation during peak hours.
  • Identification of conflicts, analysis and proposals for counter-measures.
  • Assessment of passenger transport capacities.
  • Evaluation of operation of final station "Janikov Dvor".

Study results

Experiments with created simulation model (using Villon simulation tool) allowed to examine the feasibility level of given proposals for public transport system operation. Each concept was thoroughly investigated and proposals were given in order to guarantee conflict-free operation (e.g. the need for more holding tracks for train sets). The transport capacity of the system has been estimated according to given conditions. The simulation study results allowed the customer to better estimate the urban transport system parameters as well as the amount of investment needed.
