Prague Masaryk passenger station is located in the vicinity of Prague Main railway station and Florenc bus station, between two town districts - New Town and Karlín. The ongoing development of Karlín and neighbouring Žižkov districts brings the question of possible utilisation of unused areas of Masaryk railway station and overall modernisation of the station, with the aim to create a modern and attractive urban area.

Problems and study goals

he modernisation and rebuilding of the Masaryk station requires new transport concept to be designed. Verification and improvement of this transport concept was the main objective of the simulation study. The new concept incorporated changes of the station's infrastructure and also modifications to the current operational procedures. Following main topics have been targeted in the study:

  • Assessment of the number of platforms required to guarantee smooth station operation during peak hours.
  • Evaluation of two possible platform locations.
  • Investigation of the influence of train delays on the operation.
  • Identification of operational conflicts and proposals for counter-measures.

Study results

Detailed and versatile simulation model of the station's operation, created using Villon simulation tool, established the base for investigation of given problems. Besides the Masaryk passenger station, the simulation model also included station Bubny and Sluncová region. More than 10 scenarios, representing different configurations of infrastructure and operation, have been simulated and evaluated. The occupation and rate of utilisation of platform tracks has been selected as the main criterion to judge about the feasibility of different configurations. Special attention has been given to the examination of influence of random train delays on the station's performance. Most suitable configurations of station's infrastructure and operational procedures (according to criteria approved by the customer) have been identified and recommended.
