Lausanne Triage, owned and operated by SBB Infrastruktur, is one of the most important terminals in Switzerland - 20% of inland wagon-load transport volume is sorted and classified here. The marshalling (classification) yard is situated in Lémanique region. After May 2006, the importance of this yard increased due to the concentration of train-formation processes in Swiss inland transport.

Problems and study goals
Prior to the concentration of train-formation processes in Swiss inland wagon-load transport, few important questions have to be answered:
- Is marshalling yard Lausanne Triage able to handle increased input flows (more wagons)?
- Is it necessary to expand reception group and classification group to handle more wagons?
Another solved question was related to the feasibility of relocation of locomotive maintenance facilities from Lausanne passenger train station to Lausanne Triage marshalling yard.
Study results
Several simulation experiments were realised in order to answer all questions. Results of the experiments revealed that marshalling yard is able to handle increased input flows according to the new operational concept. The study has helped to find out that there is no need for extension of reception or classification groups of sidings. This information helped to save substantial volume of investment costs. Third important outcome of the study was the finding that relocation of locomotive maintenance facilities to marshalling yard will not cause problems and troubles in the yard operation and it is advisable to realise it.
